About

Josefa is part of the Cancer Research-Post-Baccalaureate Fellows Program (CR-
PFP) funded by the American Cancer Society. She attended Kennesaw State University (KSU) in
Georgia, where she earned her B.S. in Biology with a concentration in molecular, cellular, and
developmental biology and a minor in psychology, earning Cum Laude distinction. While at KSU, Josefa was a recipient of the U-RISE scholarship, during which she worked under the
mentorship of Dr. Melanie Griffin, isolating and characterizing bacteriophages from animal
tissue as a therapeutic alternative to address antibiotic resistance of ESKAPE pathogens in
hospitals. In the Sheybani lab, Josefa’s primary research focuses on improving and applying a
clinically relevant diagnostic ultrasound system, modified for therapeutic purposes, that, when
combined with microbubbles, opens the tumor vascular barrier in breast tumors thereby
enhancing antibody uptake. Upon completing her program, Josefa plans to pursue a Ph.D. in
biomedical engineering with a specific interest in cancer research. Outside of the lab, Josefa
spends her time at home baking or crocheting. She also enjoys weightlifting, occasionally rock
climbing, and hiking.
